Riding in below freezing temperatures
Many years ago when I was a teenager, I avidly kept up to date with the British amateur cycling scene. In the early 70’s we had some really good road races in the calendar (far more than there are now) with some excellent riders. Two road racing riders that stood out for me, were the Phil’s, Edwards & Bayton. The former an extremely stylish rider. I think it was Phil Edwards, who said in an interview when he started training for the forthcoming season. He mentioned that although he trained in January, he was wary of it not being too rigorous because the weather could turn and any fitness gained could be lost. No turbo trainers back in them days. I’ve always kept this comment in mind, and not been too concerned if for any reason, ice, fog etc I’d rather stay safe and not risk an accident. And with the extremely cold weather we’ve had of late going out in icy weather is a risk I’d rather not take and wait for better day’s.
So yesterday (Sunday 22 Jan) I donned my walking boots and took the dog for a long 4 mile walk at a stiff pace and arrived home safe and sound.
